The Storm Keeper's Island by Catherine Boyle

Image
my rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This middle-grade novel is Irish folktale inspired story featuring two young siblings being sent to live with there eclectic Grandfather, the Storm Keeper of Arranmore Island. This was such a beautiful story. The Boyle family is has easily become one of my favorite book families. The sibling relationship between Tara and Finn is both real and heartfelt. The main character Fionn is such a well rounded character and I loved watching him grow throughout the story. I loved the fantasy wrapped into the story and the folktale elements. I found the book a great comfort in an age that desperately needs light added to darkness. I can't wait to continue this story.

Quick note and Red Rising: Sons of Ares Vol:1 Issues #1-6 Review

Image
I apologize I've been behind these few weeks because of birthdays and then with Coronavirus fiasco. We've had some shifts and areas to navigate through and it's been a challenge. Below is a quick read that I enjoyed recently and wanted to share. I also finished two other books but because at the request of the publishers, I will be putting those up closer to their release dates at the end of the month. Thank you so much for stopping by! my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a graphic prequel to the actual Red Rising novel series. This story follows Fitchner and Bry, the parents to Servo. This story is an action packed forbidden romance that ends in disaster. The art is raw and gritty which fits in perfect to the nature of the story. Graphic novels are a new venture for me and I am glad I picked this up. It amazes me how authors can write a good story with minimal amount of words. If you love Red Rising this is a must read. I enjoyed it and definitely will be reading volume...

Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles

my rating: ⭐️⭐️ 1/2 Huge thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.  This story is a fantasy romance following Kallia, an ex-showgirl, as she breaks away from her master and strikes out to become a magician. This story was pitched as a Caraval and Phantom of the Opera type story. I agree with Phantom of the Opera but not with Caraval. The only Caraval comparison could be the contest that takes place. But in my opinion, the contest was vastly different from the "game" in Caraval.  Overall, the story was fine. I think the author did a great job with the angsty romance of the story. Most the time, I like romance as a sub-plot but the author made it work so well in the forefront that I didn't mind it. The magic system was simply put and did not blow me away. I did feel the plot of the story could have been cut down. Nothing happened in the first 60% of the book. Yes, there was contest. Yes, there were murders but they did nothing t...

Shielded by KayLynn Flanders

my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Huge thanks to Random House Children and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.  I know this story is suppose to be in comparison to Sorcery of Thorns and Furyborn but don't think that is an accurate comparison. The story didn't put an emphasis on libraries and there were more characters involved rather than the protagonist heavy Furyborn. This was such a fun simple story. Jennesara is a princess born with magic she was never suppose to inherit. On the way to her betrothed, her wagon is attacked and she is stranded in a magic forest. Jennesara escapes, is picked by up the royal guard and taken to the castle of her betrothed. Under a false name, she does her best to save her kingdom and the prince she comes to love. The rest of the action follows these events. I enjoyed this story a lot. There is not enough to be said about the magic system in this book. It was unique, special, intriguing and fresh. The plot was simple and predictable a...

The Stone of Sorrow by Brooke Carter

my rating: ⭐️⭐️ This book had such a great start and solid potential. However, there were some fatal flaws and I did not finish this title. I found the main character changed too drastically in a short amount of time. This made it hard for me to believe the character and connect with them. The main protagonist starts out as a vulnerable girl shadowed by the legacy of her sister. However, within a few pages she is strong and making blood oaths with the boy who cursed her village trusting him wholeheartedly. This left me confused. Also she meets a Valkyrie who is referred to in plural but the story never describes the character to clarify why this is. Between all those things, I stopped reading due to confusion and ended up not finishing the book.

Banned Book Club by Kim Hyun Sook, Ko Hung-Ju, & Ryan Estrada

my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thanks to Iron Circus Comic and Edelweiss for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I loved this comic so much I swallowed it in one sitting. I'm always moved when authors take history and bring it to a level that people can easily read and understand.  This story follows Hyun Sook as she leaves for college against her parents wishes. While at college, she gets sucked into a secret banned book club led by a group of student protestors. I appreciated everything about this book. The story reflects on South Korean struggles that the world is wholly unaware of. Each of the characters are real people whose actions lead to a change in the regime of S. Korea. I loved reading about them.  They were truly inspiring and at the end I couldn't help but be moved by their actions. The comic is fasted paced, action packed and the art is stunning. This book needs to be used in schools to help students understand how fortunate they are. This was a 10/10 ...

Given by Nandi Taylor

my rating: ⭐️⭐️  Thanks so much to Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Given follows Yenni, the princess of the Moonrise Islands, as she goes to school in Cresh as part of a ritual journey before she becomes queen. During her time in Cresh, she desperately tries to find a cure for her ill father. This being her main motivation throughout the story. While at Cresh, she meets Weysh, a dragon kind, and finds out she is his "Given," in other words, mate. I desperately wanted to like this story. The premise was good and it could have played out well if it wasn't ruined by the male protagonist. I felt Weysh, the main male protaganist, was needy, annoying and unnecessary. The romance was based on insta-love (which I did not like) causing Weysh to spend the entire story pining after Yenni and making statements of love during every interaction. The author then made the mistake of Yenni being reluctant at first, instantly changing her mind and being al...
