The Rook by Frost Kay

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you Frost Kay for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Once again, thank you for ripping my heart out and putting it back in. Frost Kay is an indie writer that I'm completely committed to and this book is another example why. These main characters are fun, spicy, irritating and I love them so much. This is the second book in the series and it left me impatiently waiting for the third release. We see Tempest as she plays the role of a double agent and having no clue how to pull it off. We see the dastardly Fox pining for his Hound. This book is awesome if you need a break and a fun read with all the feels. Please Kay, come out with the third one quickly!

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was part of my summer romance reading block I accidentally created. I went in with a certain expectation because this book is beloved by the YA readers. However, I got smacked in the face with something completely different. This story follows Eleanor as she survives her mother's abusive marriage. While she suffers through it, she meets Park who is also going through a difficult relationship with his father.  This clearly has abusive themes which directly affect the main characters, so if you are sensitive to those themes I would pass on this. Overall, I liked the story. This book had some great themes with a strong female lead and the fight to do what is best for yourself. I like the relationship between the main characters. By the time I was done with the book, I was completely invested in the characters.  The writing in this book is stellar, it will definitely give you the feels. The plot flowed beautifully and the pacing was perfect.  Original...

Teen Titans: Beast Boy by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Huge thanks to DC Comics and Netgalley for this fantastic piece of literary art! I enjoyed this so, so much! I finished it a few days ago and it has been on my mind ever since. This graphic novel is a coming-of-age story featuring Garfield Logan, aka Beast Boy, as comes to understand why he just can't seem to grow any bigger. It's a story of friendship, self discovery, and a super hero coming to life. The art is my favorite part of this graphic novel. It is absolutely gorgeous. The story is well written and relatable for the young and old! I will be continuing the series! Overall, I gave this book 5 stars. I will read this one again and even purchase a hardcopy for myself. If you are a fan of super heroes, READ THIS NOW!

The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Welcome to the Kingdom of Back! Here we have a lost prince, a fae-like creature and the underrated and underestimated Nannerl Mozart. This is labelled a fantasy story but I felt it was more about Nannerl. This follows her story and her struggle to deal with her controlling and ambitious father. Also, her struggle in a dominant patriarchal society. Nannerl is a talented musician just like her brother, but she still ends up pushed into her brother's shadow. She struggles to be heard and seen in her personal life and in the music world. To deal with it, she seeks comfort in the Kingdom of Back and ultimately gets pulled into helping save that world.  I enjoyed this once I was able to sit down and read it. (Which had nothing to do with the actual book.) The magic and world building is lush and rich. Marie Lu's writing is amazing which made for an easy read.  Overall, I gave this book 3 stars because I don't think I would read it again but I would recommend it ...

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was completely deceived and wrecked by this book. When I was reading it, I was bored and could easily get lost doing something else. But then, I would be thinking about the book later and go back to reading it. So I cared but didn't care? I don't know. I felt like I needed to know what happen but then I didn't. What does that say, probably not a whole lot. This is one of those books where I have to be in the proper mindset. This also falls along of the line of my never ending hate/love relationship with sci-fi. I pick it, I put it down. I switch to audiobook (which helped). Overall, I have no idea how to feel about this book so take it for what it is.  I gave this 4 out of 5 stars because I would recommend it and I plan on continuing the series.

Furyborn by Claire Legrand

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ok, I needed some time to chew on this one to really figure out how I feel about it. So here it is, it was fine. The main characters have a ton of depth and I feel like they were developed well. They have strong female leads which I am always down for. However, I just didn't find myself actually caring enough about them to continue with the series. This is a fat book with a super slow plot line. There is some romance but it is super light in this particular book. I have heard it picks up in the continuing books. The writing is great and I have zero complaints. All and all, it's a good book. I just don't care enough about the plot or the characters to continue the series. But if you like epic fantasy with parallel plot lines then you'll probably like this book. I gave this 3 out 5 stars because there is nothing wrong with the writing and I would recommend to a friend. I just have no desire to continue to read the series.

Court's Fool by Frost Kay

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Huge thank you to Frost Kay for this eARC in exchange for an honest review. This was a satisfying ending to an amazing series. I loved this series from Rebel's Blade and that stayed consistent til Court's Fool. I love these characters and I could easily spend a day in the Aermian Court. I read this book in 24 hours because I needed to finish it ASAP. I've said it before but Frost Kay's writing is easily comparable to popular YA authors at this time. Her stories easily compete with authors like Victoria Aveyard and Sarah J. Maas. I have recommended this series to so many in the past and I will in the future. I love Tehl and Sage's story and I look forward to revisiting their kingdom in future series. I gave this four and a half stars because I would easily read it again and I will continue to recommend it to others. My only gripe is I don't think one of the minor secondary characters, Dorcus played a big enough role to be included in the sto...

The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I know this one is super polarizing, either people love it or hate it. There's no in-between. However, I enjoyed the tar out of it. I am a genuine sucker for a good King Arthur retelling and this hit right in the feels. The romance was a good, but light subplot which I personally like. The retelling of the characters were entertaining. This had a fresh plot which is something I feel is desperately needed right now. I'm a sucker for a strong, smart female lead and this hit right on the mark. I definitely plan on continuing with the series in the future. I gave this 4 out of 5 stars because I would read it again and I would recommend it to a friend.

Blog Tour featuring Mayhem by Estelle Laure

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Huge thanks to Wednesday Books and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review and for the honor of being included in the Mayhem blog tour. I love strong female characters and this book fulfilled every aspect of that. This story follows Mayhem as she navigates the world of her mother's past and the roots of her power. This book contains an unexpected murder mystery element which I fully enjoyed. The plot is rich and powerful. The characters are addictive, dynamic and relatable. I loved the female protagonists especially the unapologetic Mayhem. I loved the supernatural elements and how they were woven into the modern world. I stayed up all night and read this book in one sitting because I had to know what happened. This was the emotional rollercoaster I didn't know I needed. I gave this book 4.5 stars because of how strongly it stuck with me. I would definitely read this again and recommend it to a friend. Check out this exclusive excerpt...

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

Image
my rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I was in place where I wanted something lighthearted and an easy read. This is an enemies to lovers story (one of my favorite tropes). I listened to this on audio which was perfect. This book follows Olive and Ethan who are the lone survivors of a wedding banquet food poisoning. Since the honeymoon is already paid in full, Ethan and Olive are asked to go in place of the bride and groom. They reluctantly agree and the story moves forward from there. The characters are intelligent and lovable. I felt the way the characters came together was real and relatable. I enjoyed the family dynamics between the main characters and their siblings. Overall, this was what I needed to get out of an impending reading slump and this was the perfect book to do that. I gave this book four stars because there are some parts that I considered forced and unbelievable. However, the problems weren't enough to keep me from reading to the end. I would read this again and recommend it to a ...

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ If you haven't listened to this book on audio, you are missing out. I had a hardcopy of Illuminae but chose audio after hearing good things and I loved it! This story follows ex's Ezra and Kady as they try to save the fleet from a falling system. (There is load more but it'd be too much to try and put in a review.) I loved the banter between the main characters. Erza and Kady are amazing together and I look forward to seeing their future. The side characters are fun and lovable. Even the "enemy" Aidan is a new favorite of mine. This was a roller coaster that I am so glad I went on. The writing style is unique, fun and relatable.  I gave this book 5 stars because if you haven't read it yet, you are need to now!

Winterwood by Shea Ernshaw

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ok, so I went into this book blind because I didn't want to have any preexisting judgments about it. I'm glad I did this. There were so many polarizing reviews concerning this book, however, I don't know why that is.  The plot follows the main character, Nora, as she navigates what happened to a young man she finds in a magical forest. I loved it. The story plot was fresh, smart and intriguing. It turned into a mystery that I wasn't expecting and I chewed through it quickly. I ended up staying up all night reading (this never happens) because I couldn't sleep without knowing what happens. If you love mystery, magical forests and strong women this is the book for you. I gave this book 4 stars because I would easily read it again and recommend it to a friend.

Scavenge the Stars by Tara Sim

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 This YA book is a retelling of the Count of Monte Cristo from a female perspective. I devoured this story because I enjoyed it so much. It is based on a revenge plot that came together beautifully. The writing is great and the word economy was on point. I enjoyed the twist and turns in the plot. The characters are unique and a breath of fresh air. The main female protagonist was smart and self sufficient. This is the fresh read I didn't know I needed. Overall, reading the book was well worth the time. I gave it 3 1/2 stars because I wouldn't reread it but I would recommend it to a friend.

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was awesome. Fae, magic woods, folklore, everything fantasy lovers can appreciate. Isobel is a talented painter tasked with painting dangerous beings. Isobel meets Rook, a Fae prince, who kidnaps her to take to his kingdom. Along the way, they meet obstacles and they must work together to survive. This story was everything I wanted in a fantasy book. I wanted a magical, dangerous adventure and that's exactly what I got. I loved Isobel. She is well rounded, intelligent and down-to-earth. Rook was fun, arrogant and seductive everything a Fae prince should be.  I gave this four stars because I would easily re-read it and suggest it to a friend.

Adulthood is a Myth by Sarah Andersen

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ As we all know, "adulting" is hard and Sarah did a great job of capturing that on paper.  I enjoyed this so much. This is a series of comics that explain all the ironies of "adulting." The art is simple but fun. The comics are short and quippy. I laughed out loud so many times. If you need a break from the norm, just pick this up. It's a quick read and great break from the norm.  I gave this 5 stars. I would for sure recommend this to anyone and everyone and I am already considering rereading it.

Pirates, Princes and Payback by Frost Kay

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Gigantic thanks to Frost Kay for this e-book in exchange for an honest review.  It's no secret that I love Frost Kay's writing and again this book didn't disappoint. I read this story when it was released as a series of novellas and I really enjoyed reading them again. One thing I love as a reader is being able to tell when a writer had fun writing a book. Frost Kay had a blast writing this story because that energy is translated on the page. The whole story is high energy, the humor is laugh out loud funny, and the characters are super lovable. This was just all around a fun read. If you need something that will lighten your mood and warm your heart this is for you.  I gave it 4 stars because I would reread again and recommend it to a friend.

Graphic Novel: The Lost Carnival by Michael Moreci and Sas Milledge

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Huge thanks to DC Comics and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. First off, can we just appreciate how gorgeous this cover is? It's beautiful! That same artistry carries throughout the entire comic. I loved that the artist used a simple but elegant color palette to tell Dick Grayson's story. I am a huge fan of the Batman series so I eagerly anticipated getting my hands on this and it definitely didn't disappoint. I loved reading about Robin's story and his life before he was Batman's trusty sidekick. There's magic, there's tragedy, a circus and, of course, there's the Flying Grayson's. There's not much more you could ask for in a story. This was wholesome, gut wrenching and addictive. I immediately connected with the characters from the first page and I couldn't stop reading. I swallowed this in one sitting. I gave this 4 stars because I have all intentions in continuing in the series and r...

The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ O.W.L.s read to fulfill Divinations or a book that is random on your to-be-read (TBR.) This story is a fantasy novel that follows the cunning, ambitious Alessandra as she manipulates her way into the castle of the Shadow King. The plan is to seduce him, marry him, kill him and claim his kingdom for herself. However, things don't quite go as planned. Slytherin romance is how this description is given and it lives up to it beautifully. If you are looking for morally grey loveable characters this book is for you. This book is a simple read that is well written and contains a refreshing plot line. The characters were intriguing, dynamic and developed well throughout the story. My favorite character was the Shadow King. His character was deep and multilayered. I easily fell in love with him along with the main female character. I loved the female protagonist; she was unapologetic with a no-nonsense attitude. All this put together made for a great read tha...

Magical Readthon O.W.L.s 2020

Image
Welcome back to my blog! Thank you for visiting. As many of you know already, the 2020 O.W.L.s Readathon hosted by Booktuber Book Roast is now upon us for the month of April.   This year I have chose to participate and after "consulting with my career advisor," I have chosen...drum roll...Journalist or Writer. Shocking I know. So here is what is required for me to pass my "exam." The way it works is you find your career in the guidebook. I'll link it here: Wizarding Careers Guidebook 2020 here . You pick your "career" (mine being Journalist or Writer) and then these course are what you are required to complete for OWLs. So as seen above, they are History of Magic, Muggle Studies and a subject of my choosing. So these "courses" are now linked to reading prompts. So for my reading to pass my OWLs, I must choose three books; History of Magic or a book featuring witches or wizards, a subject of my choosing, I am picking Charms or a book...

Imagine Me by Tahereh Mafi

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Ok, so I wanted to take some time out to mull this over before I write this review because I needed to get my thoughts in order. Overall, the book was fine. It gave me the ending I needed to walk away knowing that these characters will carry on and that they will ok. I'm ok with that. That's really all I needed by this point. I enjoy Tahereh's books because as a writer I love the emotion she's captures when she's writing her characters. The emotions are real, detailed and makes me feel empathy for her characters. I felt like there was a good balance between the plot and the characters. The plot and the characters pushed forward smoothly and complimented each other well. I am ok with how things turned out in this novel and I am ok with the series ending at this point. I can't wait to see what Tahereh's next endeavor is.  Overall, I gave it 3 stars. It does the job and ends the series in a way that there is closer for the readers. Would...

Graphic Novel: Gotham High by Melissa de la Cruz

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Big thanks to Netgalley and DC Comics for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This story is a twist on Batman and what his life might have been like if he had to navigate high school. The art is beautiful and the take on Gotham City High was fun and unique. This was such a fun read. I enjoyed the plot line and the relationships between the characters. I enjoyed the back story the author created and how it played out throughout the story. I definitely will be continuing with this series in the future. Here is some cool art from the comic. Thank you to Warner Brothers and DC Comics for access to these awesome pages!

We are the Wildcats by Siobhan Vivian

Image
my rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A big thanks to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster Books for this Arc in exchange for an honest review.  This book follows a girls field hockey team as they begin their season highly anticipated season. The story pulls the reader in by diving  into the brains of adolescent girls as they navigate the politics of high school athletics on a state winning team. Beginning with the "jersey ceremony," the girls navigate one night of fun and betrayal as they struggle to earn the title of Wildcat. I connected so heavily with this story. Growing up I was an athlete for most my life and I felt every moment these girls went through. I felt the anger, the insecurity, trying to fit in, the politics of being a captain and the pressure to be perfect. I connected to many experiences these girl went through including watching my friends struggle with a toxic coach, The story is broken down into different views which I loved because it allowed me to connec...
